Film Series: Soul in Cinema

Documentary films are being shown the third Sunday of the Month, from noon to 2 at Barrett Hall from October through April. The series is open to members of the community.

The aims of this series are to provide an opportunity for viewing excellent films on spiritual issues relevant for living today; for social gathering of folks in the Universalist Society and the larger community; for sharing and deeper spiritual growth among attendees. Each film is followed by a structured discussion facilitated by Rev. M’ellen Kennedy. We usually view films that are about an hour (plus or minus) so that there’s time for a meaningful discussion.

Snacks will be served, and there is no charge.

February 19, RENEWAL: Stories from America’s Religious-Environmental Movement
“The religious environmental movement is potentially key to dealing with the greatest problem humans have ever faced, and it has never been captured with more breadth and force than in RENEWAL. I hope this movie is screened in church basements and synagogue social halls across the country, and that it moves many more people of faith off the fence and into action.”
    — Bill McKibben

“RENEWAL offers a comprehensive overview of what different religions are doing about the awesome devastation of Earth’s life systems now taking place. The filmmakers’ vision of the problem and understanding of viable solutions show rare depth of perception and are matched only by their sense of the urgency of action if we are to realize our hopes for the future.”
    — Thomas Berry

The January film was “In Transition” and drew about 20 folks. The film is about the Transition movement -- communities around the world responding to peak oil and climate change with creativity, imagination and humor, and setting about rebuilding their local economies and communities. We're showing RENEWAL to follow up on the strong interest of this film. Hope you’ll join us.

March 18, Sun Dagger
The Spring Equinox is just a few days away.  This film looks at a fascinating construction by the Anasazi Indians that is illumined with a dagger of lights during the winter and summer solstices and equinoxes.  And it also marks the 19 year cycle of the moon! “This classic, timeless film documents the extraordinary celestial calendar created by the ancient North American Indians, and rediscovered by artist Anna Soafer, high on a butte in New Mexico.  The ‘dagger’ is presently the only known site in the world that marks the extreme positions of both the sun and moon.  The film explores the complex culture of the Anasazi Indians who constructed the calendar and thrived both spiritually and materially in the hard environment of Chaco Canyon a thousand years ago.“  The film is narrated by Robert Redford.
